History
For the Migros founder, it had always been important that the general population should have access to a range of cultural and social services.
1925 – Migros is established
Migros AG is entered in the commercial register of the City of Zurich as a private company on 15 August 1925.
1941 – Migros becomes a cooperative
In the midst of a general time of crisis, when war is raging in Europe, Gottlieb Duttweiler makes the bold decision to give Migros away.
1941 – The Monte Generoso Railway is saved
Monte Generoso: “If they sold cutlets the size of toilet seats there, the whole of Switzerland would come.”
1943 – Investment in Praesens Film
Migros acquired an interest in Praesens Film AG as far back as 1943.
1944 – The Club School is launched
Migros begins offering language courses in spring 1944.
1946 – Park “im Grüene” is gifted
A 45,000m2 estate in Rüschlikon becomes the property of the foundation.
1948 – The first Clubhouse Concerts
The 24 September 1948 issue of the Brückenbauer magazine finally announces the first cycle of concerts entitled “Great artists play eternal music”.
1950 – The Duttweilers’ 15 theses
Adele and Gottlieb Duttweiler’s 15 theses are published in the Brückenbauer magazine at the end of 1950 – as their legacy.
1956 – The Eurocentres are created
“Learning languages where they are actually spoken” – language courses abroad.
1957 – The Culture Percentage is enshrined in the articles of association
The Culture Percentage is defined for the first time and incorporated into the articles of association in 1957.
1962 – Gottlieb Duttweiler dies (1888-1962)
Gottlieb Duttweiler dies on 8 June 1962 at the age of 74.
1963 – The Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute (GDI ) opens
Switzerland’s oldest think tank conducts research into megatrends and countertrends, builds knowledge and develops future scenarios.
1969 – First grants for artists
The study prize for instrumental music marks the beginning of Migros Culture Percentage’s promotion of young talent.
1971 – Migros saves Signal de Bougy near Geneva
1977 – The Tinguely Fountain
To mark its 50th anniversary in 1975, Migros gifts the city of Basel what will eventually become one of its landmarks.
1978 – InK: Halle für internationale neue Kunst
The Halle für internationale neue Kunst opens its doors in Zurich in 1978.
1980 – 100 years of “Grün 80”
Migros Basel commits itself to preserving the site of “Grün 80” for 100 years.
1987 – Musiques Suisses label
The CD label for Swiss classical music and new folk music.
1988 – Dance Festival Steps
Dance festival promoting contemporary dance.
1933 – Arranging concert appearances
The Migros Culture Percentage Arranging Concerts programme covers two thirds of the musicians’ fees.
1994 – L’arc: Littérature et atelier de réflexion contemporaine
The Abbey of St Peter and St Paul in Romainmôtier is the oldest Romanesque abbey church in Switzerland.
1995 – conTAKT
conTAKT is now an intercultural prize of encouragement that supports local initiatives throughout Switzerland.
1996 – The Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst opens its doors
The Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst sees itself as a hub for contemporary art production.
1999 – The Gurten Park im Grünen
In June 1995, almost 90% of the people of Bern vote in favour of the Gurten 2000 project in a referendum.
1999 – The Gottlieb Duttweiler Chair
The Gottlieb Duttweiler Chair of International Retail Management conducts research into retail and wholesale issues.
2006 – x-to-the-power-of-heart
The x-to-the-power-of-heart project recognises schools and classes for their involvement in good causes.
2006 – innovage

2007 – 50 years of Migros Culture Percentage
A groundbreaking idea celebrates a big anniversary!
2007 – “Artist’s carrier bags” project is revived
Since 2007, paper carrier bags designed by Swiss artists have gone on show twice a year.
2009 – 40 years of talent promotion
The study prizes first introduced in 1969 are relaunched as talent competitions.
2010 – Tavolata
Tavolata means helping people to help themselves.
2012 – Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst reopens
The renovated museum now shows temporary solo and group exhibitions plus works from its own collection over two floors.
